Satish Mathur appointed new DGP of Maharashtra

Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Satish Mathur on 31st July took charge as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. He was formally handed over the charge by outgoing DGP Praveen Dixit at a formal ceremony in Mumbai. Mathur, a St Stephen's alumni, is the first IPS officer in the country to be trained by the National Security Guard (NSG).
A 1981 batch officer, Mathur has served with the CBI during the 1993 serial blasts trial and also as the DCP in Pune. Mathur has also served as Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Mumbai and as ADG (Establishments), Maharashtra, before being appointed Commissioner of Police in Pune.

RG Jadhav passes away

Noted Marathi critic and litterateur R G Jadhav passed away at his residence here this morning following prolonged illness. He was 83. Born on August 24, 1932, at Vadodara in Gujarat, Jadhav served as a professor of Marathi literature in various colleges, including one in Amravati, Elphinstone College in Mumbai, and also at Milind College in Aurangabad. Jadhav presided over Marathi Sahitya Sammelan held at Aurangabad in 2004 and worked as chief editor of Marathi Vishwakosha between 2000 and 2002.
Conceived along the lines of the World Almanac and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the ambitious ‘Vishwakosha’ project, launched by the State government in 1960 in an effort to inform and edify the Marathi-speaking world on modern science and arts, began as a print concept before moving online in 2011. Much feted, Prof. Jadhav authored more than 40 works of literary criticism and poetry, including ‘Anandacha Doh’ (a study on Saint Tukaram), ‘Nilee Paha’ (a critique of Dalit literature) and most famously, ‘Bapu’ — his tour de force of 91 reflective poems on Mahatma Gandhi. He was also associated with the Sadhana Trust and worked with rationalist and anti-superstition crusader Narendra Dabholkar.

Chhagan Bhujbal arrested by ED

Former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal has been arrested by the the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in money laundering case. Chhagan Bhujbal a strongman and a close associate of Sharad Pawar has been arrested by the ED on Monday evening after he was grilled by the probing agency.
The ED had summoned Bhujbal on March 8 following a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirit Somaiya in connection with cases lodged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act pertaining to alleged irregularities in the construction of a new 'Maharashtra Sadan' in New Delhi, worth several hundred crores of rupees. The ED had on February 1 arrested Bhujbal's nephew Sameer Bhujbal. Later last month, it questioned Bhujbal's son Pankaj Bhujbal, a legislator.

Fadnavis apologises to Hazare for any 'security lapse'

In a magnanimous gesture, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has apologised to veteran social crusader Kisan Baburao alias Anna Hazare for any "security lapses" in the protection details assigned to him. Lauding the 78-year-old leader's contributions to making a clean society, Fadnavis said the government would not withdraw the security cover as demanded by Hazare.
Following several threats to eliminate him in the recent past, Hazare was accorded Z-category security and had recently alleged that the police personnel assigned to him were lax in their duties.

Thane girl to attend US Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit

Thane college girl studying in Mumbai has been selected to attend the US Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit to be held in Washington next year. 
Oishika Neogi, 16, who just completed her Class 12 exams in science stream from the B.K. Gadia A Level Junior College in Malad, north-west Mumbai, will represent India at the global summit of youngsters in January 2017 and interact with the newly-elected President and Vice-President of the US.

SC clears decks for dance bars in Mumbai

Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared the decks for the issuance of dance bar licences to hotels and restaurants in Mumbai as it modified the conditions for the permit and dropped the insistence on installation of CCTV cameras at restaurants and dance performance area.
"The modified conditions along with conditions on which there is no cavil shall be complied with within three days (by the petitioner Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association) and the respondents (licensing authorities) shall issue the licences within ten days therefrom," said the apex court bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh in their order on Wednesday.

CBI to set up cyber-crime investigation branch in Mumbai

Central Bureau of Investigation is planning to set up a cyber-crime investigation branch here, its director Anil Sinha said here on Tuesday. For this, the Maharashtra government has been requested to notify the CBI for taking up investigation of offences under the Information Technology Act, 2000, he said, while inaugurating the agency's new city headquarters at Bandra-Kurla Complex here.
Addressing the gathering, he said that though the CBI started as an anti-corruption agency, in the past few decades, its scope has increased to cover economic offences, serious frauds and sensational cases.
